Do either have the “issue”? I'm still shocked that they lost the class action suit for what I'd think is really a non-issue.

But people have perpetuated the myth that anything not made in Germany should require zero maintenance to keep it running, and if you have to add oil every 20k miles then obviously there is something wrong.

The Outback (CVT) hasn’t shown any signs of it through 48,000 miles. The Forester (MT) is burning about a quart of 0w20 every 3-4,000 miles. I keep a jug of Mobil 1 around and keep it topped off. I’m not too worried about it. We’ve been getting all service done at the dealer (kept going after the 2 years of maintenece deal ran out, because they’ve been so reasonable). Our service advisor says he sees it much more often on the manuals because they tend to run up to higher RPM more often. I get the impression that the problem is real, but not as widespread as the Internet would have you believe.

I thought the burning/leaking oil was a feature, that way fresh oil constantly got added. My parents had 2 Subarus when i was young, and both leaked oil.

Fair enough. The just seems like normal oil use to me, especially with such lightweight viscosity.
The above Legacy goes through about two quarts every 5000 miles, too =)

Exactly. It’s 0w20 - it’s going to get used up over a few thousand miles. I don’t know what people are expecting. There must be a few FB engines out there really going through oil like crazy to have started all of this nonsense, but burning a quart or two oil between changes doesn’t seem like a reason for a lawsuit.
